The Final Poll
Friday, November 7th, 2008Dom Post: In what is likely to be the final published poll before tomorrow’s general election National holds a 7.5 per cent lead over Labour - but the door is still open to Prime Minister Helen Clark to form a Government.
The Roy Morgan poll contrasts with four polls published over the last day which all showed National heading for victory, although in some cases it would need Act or UnitedFuture to secure a majority.
The Roy Morgan poll, taken in the two weeks to last Sunday - before the other four polls were completed - puts National on 42.5 per cent, Labour on 34.5, the Greens on 10 and NZ First on 4.5 per cent.
Act is steady on 4 per cent, the Maori Party on 2.5 and United Future on 1 per cent.
We could either see a National/United/Act coalition or a Labour/Greens/Maori/Progressive tomorrow. I think Turia will see National just out of courtesy, but there is no way her consituency will go for it. If it is a Labour coalition win, a lot of people who voted for National will be questioning MMP. My only argument is this, if the majority of the country voted left-leaning parties in, it reflects the ideology of the country as problematic as it may appear.
